Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association announced the return of the Molokai Hoe canoe race, which is slated for Oct. 8.
The 41-mile race from Molokai to Oahu — which has been a beloved tradition in Hawaii for over 70 years — will bring together paddlers from around the world. The Molokai Hoe is one of the most prestigious canoe races in the world, attracting top paddlers from Hawaii, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. It is known for its challenging conditions — including strong currents, open-ocean swells and winds that can reach up to 30 knots.
This year, OHCRA has partnered with Salt and Air Studios and Nexstar Media Inc. — owner of Hawaii’s TV Stations KHON2 and KHII Channel 5 — to produce and air the live event on Oct. 8.
Nexstar Media Inc will broadcast the live event on KHII Channel 5 and livestream on www.khon2.com.
In order to host the race in a manner respectful to the Molokai community, OHCRA is working with airline carriers to bolster flight travel options for the full week of travel leading up to the race, while ensuring flight availability for community travel needs.
All race participants are asked to plan in advance of the race to coordinate logistics with air travel and boat transport.
